Marlene Baxter Stauffer '82 (126 Old Mill road, Barto, PA 19504; This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) I work at Blommer Chocolate Company in East Greenville, PA. I am married to Brook Stauffer and we have two girls, Jordan, 21, a junior at Penn State and Haley, 15, a sophomore in High school.

Class of 1987

I am with Sterman Masser Inc. almost eleven years. My "official" title is Food Safety/Human Resources Manager. I manage the several food safety auditing schemes the company is under; as well as personnel hiring and compliance with H.R. regulations. I also continue to wear several other "hats" in the company. Every day is an adventure.

Sterman Masser Inc. recently became GLOBALG.A.P. certified. We're pretty sure we're the first potato grower in the U.S. to achieve this certification.

Personally, my life has had some changes. I am in the process of getting divorced. This was a painful decision but one that will be better for both of us. Cory and I remain friends.

I'd love to hear from the Fall 1986 Little Sister Pledge Class. Where are you guys??

For the last three years I've been part of the team at Sterman Masser, Inc., a large fresh potato growing, packing and shipping operation in Sacramento, Pa. I wear several hats including the food safety program, employee ""stuff"", and quality control.

Class of 1980

I've been out of the farming business for 22 years now. Still live on the farm where my cousin now raises Shorthorn cattle for show and barrel horses. I am now a Pilot and Manager of Flight Operations for a corporation here in Pittsburgh. I married Gail from college 28 years ago and have two fine sons 19 and 22 years old. The oldest is now attending PSU for Engineering. The youngest was accepted into the US Air Force Academy. He is home on a medical sendback and intends to return in June 2011. He wants to be an Aerospace/aeronautical engineer. I finished my MBA through Embry Riddle Aeronautical Univ. It was a slow process but with everything else I have going it is the only way to go. Life has been good since AZ. A lot of good things happened at AZ. Learning to be part of a team was very important and our pledge class worked well together. One of my best memories of pledging was sneaking out of the attic during a house meeting and attacking the brothers with snowballs while they met in the living room. The Fraternity at AZ and the brotherhood made college much more than an education of books. Keith B. Lutz '80 Oakdale, Pa This email address is being protected from spambots. Graduated from PSU, '83 in Ag. Mech. No real jobs so went to graduate study in Florida, but ended up moving to Charlottesville, VA with my new wife. Found a job at an Ethanol Plant processing Fuel Alchohol. Eventually we totally automated the Plant, and had nothing else to do so we started our own Controls Business (CIM Associates, Inc.). Now we automate everything from steel production to food processing, even worked at the other end, automating pig manure flushing for Smithfield. Now we work for Merck, GE Fanuc, GM, Trex, you name it, and have 4 offices in Virginia! Our main office is right beside a corn field, but I miss the farms, and I rarely get near a tractor. :( I live in the suburbs of UVA, and enjoy my 3 kids as much as possible! Look me up if you like! I am coming up on 35 years as a soils & crops consultant in NW, PA (specializing in grapes) and actively searching for an apprentice to eventually take over the business. My wife, Andrea Nazarenko, retired from teaching 9-12 family & consumer sciences at Harbor Creek High in June and she wants to travel a little more and spend more time with our first grandchild, Cascia Linn, who is 16 months old.

A neat thing about joining AZ was getting to know a cousin, George May '71, who grew up about ten miles away in a different school district. We pledged the same winter term (only four of us in 1969) as I had gone to Behrend for two years and he had transferred from Delaware Valley. After a career in LA, he has moved back to the home area and we see each other regularly.

Judy and I retired in June and have moved to a 55+ community in Cornwall, PA. We took a retirement trip to South America in July with Brother Harler and his wife. In Oct. we had training with Lifewater International - an NGO that we will volunteer with to teach sanitation and hygiene in developing countries. Please note our new address and plan to visit if in the area.

All is fairly well here. We had to curtail our traveling somewhat due to some health problems with Gail (nothing really serious). We did plan a trip to Nova Scotia by car and got as far as Bar Harbour, Maine. The next morning we were to drive onto the ferry to cross to Halifax, but Gail picked up some insidious bug and was in no condition to hazard any rough sea duty, so we decided to go home. Gail crawled into the back seat and fell into a sound sleep. Somewhere in Conn. I got off I-495 and filled up with gas, continued South and headed West on the Mass. Turnpike. About 20 miles along the way I got a phone call, ?Where are you?? Seems I left Gail back at the gas station. I expected to find a very unhappy camper when I picked her up, but she was just so relieved that my phone was turned on. We both had a good laugh. In our advancing years we?re learning to find amusement in our absent-minded foibles.

It was great to see updates from some of my classmates, so here's mine. I've been married to Jerry Ghidiu for 22 years. He's an Entomology professor at Rutgers University, at an experiment station in Bridgeton, NJ. I worked for FMC for 7 years as an Entomologist, sold real estate for 11 years, and now teach basic reading and math skills to 4th and 5th graders. We have a 15 year old son Michael, who just became an Eagle Scout. I volunteer with the Boy Scouts and PTA. My email address is This email address is being protected from spambots. While considering retirement after 33 years with USDA, they made me an offer (I could have refused !!) - Six months in sunny Afghanistan! Starting July 25, I'll be the ag engineer on a USDA team with soil conservationist, ag economists, vets, etc. to help with the reconstruction of Afghan agriculture. ""Til next year"".

Carl Hild ('72) and wife Vicki hosted me, my wife Margie and daughter Debbie at their home in Anchorage this month (Feb 06). Ironically, weather in Alaska at the time was warmer than in Cleveland by a good 20 degrees...forcing cancellation of some dog races. We had a blast, reminiscing about AZs, the Penn State Mountaineering Club, and generally catching up. Carl now is employed at the University of Alaska/Anchorage and working on his PhD. This comes after a trip to Antarctica in Dec-Jan (we figured we'd not have to unpack cold-weather gear). I'm still in Ohio writing. My 7/2/03 update still holds: I do lead a boring life.

As an ag engineer, I'll be planning and designing structures such as irrigation canals, storage dams, etc.- also been involved with getting tractors and windmills onto farms. Only sorry I'll be missing Penn State's return-to-glory football season!!

Happy New Year! My 6 month assignment with USDA tin Afghanistan is nearing completion - looking forward to returning to PA and family by mid. January. It's been an interesting experience - as with most foreign adventure, it's helped to put the world in perspective - other than from just the ""US view"". Had a chance to do some really unusual ag engineering!? Be sure to contact me if you're in the central PA area

Frank Resides set up the reunion; we'd all been in touch with each other over the years via annual newsletters coordinated by Dick Criley

Participating: Carl Anderson, Glenn Buss, Ted Cole, Dick Criley, Wayne Heebner, Ken Hickok, Rick Holm, Karroll Kershner, Dick Kessler, Frank Madden, Frank Resides, Dick Reiter, Herb Rothe, Chuck Steen. Unable to attend: Jack Patrizio, Ken Platt. Deceased: Doug McKee, Tom Thompson.

The Class contributed $1500 to the AZ fund and chellenge other classes to do the same.

I have just been awarded two new patents on a new alloy of Rhenium that I developed for use in mass spectrometers and other scientific instruments. This new material alloys yttrium with rhenium to produce a filament that does not sag or warp and exhibits increased life times. The addition of yttria reduces the grain size of the rhenium metal, thereby producing a stronger wire that does not warp when heated. This is the culmination of 3 years of research in developing this new alloy of rhenium. It is currently being marketed by my company, Scientific Instrument Services. A paper was given on this new alloy at the ASMS meeting last year in Denver and is listed on our web site at: http://www.sisweb.com/referenc/applnote/app-96-reduce-ms-filament-warping.htm

My input at this time questions the AZ Charitable Trust, and the Annual Fund. Don't know how to pose a question, so I thought I'd try this venue.
I see next to nothing about the Trust, and it seems to me that it should be a very valuable asset, and attraction for prospective members if they could see that they could have an opportunity for significant financial aid.
Over some years my Trust contributions total over 4k, which at my last known understanding related to around 7% of the total. Seems like some emphasis should be Trust-directed. Is there no longer any sort of pledge to the Trust by graduates?
Seems like the Annual Fund generates pretty good revenue, where is the accounting for disbursement. Is there any that could be applied to the Trust (which would not allow charitable donation claim by contributors to the Fund.

Maybe someone could provide some enlightenment. Bill Wieger

After finishing up my PhD in biochemistry at PSU, I worked at American Tobacco in the research department near Richmond, Va for about 30 years. After retiring early, I taught chemistry at a local community college for five years. Then Pam and I started building our retirement home in the mountains of western Virginia near Lexington. After eight years of working on it we are almost ready to move in. We have three grown children. Our daughter and son-in-law live in St Paul, MN; our son and daughter-in-law live in Wheaton, IL; and our youngest son lives and teaches in Shanghai, China. So, we do some travelling these days. I am still actively involved in playing my horn in a brass ensemble that I organized and also play with the local orchestra. We especially enjoy the country living and support local efforts for locally grown produce and meat on the many small farms in our area.

I categorize myself as semi-retired -- from Roy O. Martin Lumber Co. (central LA), wherein I was Forest Manager for one of the largest privately-owned timberland enterprises in the US @ 600k acres. Have enjoyed exceptional career with locations beginning in Idaho, and thence to CO, CA, New Eng, AR, & LA.

Am steeped in aspects of alternate energy, esp. cellulosic/wood biomass to liquid fuels and the related outstanding future therefrom, and biodiesel. Was principal organizer of the business which evolved to into the first biodiesel operation in LA; which we sold in late '06 for an offer that we couldn't afford to refuse (although we wanted to continue the business).

have invested in a couple other ventures, and have resumed intense interest in the biomass to fuels opportunity, wwith what I believe will be breakthrough technology.

I pursue many local and regional citizen interests, plus professional (Society of American Foresters) positions, all of which are of much interest and gusto, and involve much time. Have been single since wife (Pat) died in '85; and have been able to enjoy the the great companionship of several really fine girlfriends.

Was on campus for the last weekend of April for the 100th anniversary of the School of Forestry (and the very impressive new Forest Resources building). Checked into the House, which at the time was preparing for fun week to begin (which hopefully resulted in the cleanup to a spic and span condition).

Kay and I moved to North Port, FL over two years ago. After spending most of my working career in Southern California we got cabin fever in western North Carolina in the winters we spent there. We are too used to being outside and active year round. I wish I could say my golf game keeps improving but I am determined to keep trying until I get it right. Our community has a 27 hole course and we usually play about 4 times a week. I finally retired completely from Monrovia Nursery in August after almost 40 years of association with them.
Any horticultural brothers or sisters looking for a job should give them a look. They sure were good to me over the years. We keep in closest touch with Al Cartwright and wife Denise. Al has a small animal practice in Glendale, CA. Those of you who remember Al will be pleased to hear he hasn't changed much and has participated in an ocean swimming event in LaJolla, CA for the past 15-20 years. He has kept in great shape. So is his sense of humor.

Just couldn't hold a job! Was on faculty (Veterinary Pathology/wildlife diseases) at Iowa State, Cornell, and finally at Texas A&M, whence I retired from the chair I held from '87 to '98. I was led to believe retirement was that well deserved time for ""quiet reflection."" Guess that's why I dreaded it so! Actually, I can't fit in much (any?) time for reflection! For the good part of four decades I put a bunch of interests on the back burner and am now deeply involved in art (stone and glass carving and engraving), photographing prehistoric rock art, luthery (making harps - and not playing them very well...), serving on the Board and as Pres. of the Brookings (SD) Arts Council, working in a cooperative artists' gallery in Watertown, SD, traveling (repeatedly to Scotland and Alaska and frequently on stone-gathering forays throughout the US.), biking, x-country skiing, volunteering with the local Democratic Party, and editing the newsletter of the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in Sioux Falls. Lee, James (adopted), and Tom (step-son) are all well and scattered about the country. Jeremy just got his driver's license. We are in South Dakota because Tanya, also a veterinary pathologist, didn't have the sense to be old enough to retire, so she's on the faculty at SD State in the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab as diagnostic pathologist and in charge of the immunohistochemisry lab there. Oh yeah... I give occassional (absolutely fascinating) guest lectures in the orientation course for pre-vet students. Life is good! It's great to see a bunch of familiar names at this site. Ran into Henry Fortna at a PA Veterinary Assoc. meeting in the mid 90s and I had a great - albeit too short - visit with Charlie and Lee Rutschky on a quick trip thru State College a couple of years ago. Anyone heard from or about Bob Pollock? (E)Ric Holm? Bronie (Bronson) Lane? Carl Koch? Best t'y'all! Dave Graham, '61
